TODAY (Thursday)
This (Thursday) afternoon the annual show of fruit, vegetables, flowers, etc., in connection with the St. Ives Horticultural Society took place in the recreation ground. The weather in the morning was dull, but a northerly wind indicated a fineday, and altogether there was every promise of a successful exhibition. The number of entries was well up to the average, and the quality of the exhibits was good. A new class, one for needlework, was well patronised, and the exhibits of the school children were much admired. A band contest, in which Rushden Temperance Silver Band, Cambridge Town Band, March Railway Band and Ramsey Town Band competed, was a special attraction. In addition there was a display of fireworks and dancing, and a day's enjoyment was well provided for. A full list of prize winners will appear next week.

FOUR BANDS IN THE BAND CONTEST
The amateur and open classes witnessed splendid fights between the leading gardeners of the district, and Houghton Manor, Rheola, Stanley House, and the Priory well held their own against their other competitors. In the cottagers' tent E.E. Chambers stood out very prominently, and old Mr Joseph Bullen's famous musk took first prize for the 35th time. In the open tent the groups and table decorations were the chief attractions. In the latter there was a considerable falling off in the work of arrangement, but the other classes set apart for the ladies were of a very high order of merit. There was a large attendance of the general public during the afternoon. The lovely Stanley House gardens were thrown open for inspection by Mr J.B. Ellis, and were well patronised. Probably the greatest musical treat ever offered by the Committee was the band contest which took place in the afternoon, with Mr G.H. Mercer, of Sheffield, as the judge. The bands competing were Rushden Temperance, Cambridge Town, Ramsey Town, and March Railway, the winning band providing music for the promenade in the evening. Each band marched off from the Constitutional Club at six minutes' interval, and played to the ground. There the stand was occupied in rotation, and the test piece was listened to with keen interest by the crowd. The Committee responsible were : Messrs W. S. Harrison, senr., B. Gifford, G. Fuller, F. Searle, F. G. Reynolds and C. A. Stiles.
